Because they are considered more serious than other crimes, felonies are the crimes that carry lengthy prison sentences, large fines, long terms of probation and other serious penalties.
Of course, the exact penalties will vary based on the criminal charges that a person faces. However, some of the most severe penalties on felony convictions are reserved for those charges involving a weapon. Felony possession of a firearm and other weapon charges are not treated lightly in Oregon.
One Portland man is facing a variety of serious criminal charges stemming from his alleged use of a gun. According to reports, the 47-year-old man was involved in a shooting that took place in Northeast Portland on May 30, 2015. The incident allegedly took place near the intersection of Wygant and Northeast 72nd in Portland at 12:47 a.m. In the incident, a 39-year-old man was injured. Despite the fact that his injuries were life threatening, he survived the shooting.
Following the incident, police opened an investigation. It wasn't until July 11, that the man in this case was arrested. During his arrest, police claim that he was wearing a bullet proof vest. They also say he was in possession of several illegal drugs and a gun. He faces several charges relating to this arrest.
Now, however, he is facing additional felony charges for his supposed involvement in the shooting that took place so many months ago. These charges include unlawful use of a weapon, attempted murder with a firearm, first degree assault with a firearm and others.
When people are facing felony charges for the use of a weapon, their criminal defense is extremely important. Defending themselves from the severe penalties often means that they need to protect their rights from the beginning of an investigation. Like this case, an investigation can take months, and people should know their legal rights during all stages of a criminal investigation and proceeding.
