Oregon women face various felony charges after arrest

Most people understand the seriousness of felony charges. Many people understand that those found guilty of felony crimes can be sentenced to long prison sentences, large fines, probation and more. Convicted felons often lose other rights too including the right to vote or own firearms. However, many people may not understand the criminal defense options available to those fighting felony charges.

Two Oregon women will likely be exploring their criminal defense options following a recent arrest. According to reports, the women -- ages 36 and 48 -- were arrested in a kitchen goods store. Police claim that during this arrest they found $2,000 worth of stolen goods on the women. This property was taken from other stores. Police claim that the women were part of a retail theft ring that has been operating in the Portland area. In addition to the property, the police claim that the women were also found with drugs during their arrest. According to police, the women were in possession of cocaine, heroin and meth.

As a result, the women have been charged with felony drug charges. They have also been charged with second degree theft. One woman also faces charges for probation violation.

Just because charges are brought against a person -- like the women in this case -- does not mean that the people are automatically guilty. With the proper criminal defense strategy, charges can be reduced or eliminated. The specific criminal defense options available will depend on the charges brought against a person. For drug crimes, it may be proper, for example, to challenge search and seizure procedures carried out by police. For other situations, it may be best to try and negotiate with prosecutors.

With the right help, Oregon citizen facing felonies can create the best solution for them. By taking the right approach people can try to avoid penalties and resume a normal life.
