When people are intoxicated, they do not always make the best decisions. Intoxicants -- like drugs or alcohol -- can change people's sense of judgment and mistakes are easily made. One common mistake is getting behind the wheel of a car after having too much to drink. While normally people may see this as risky and inappropriate, intoxicated people can still make the wrong decision.
This split second decision can lead to serious consequences. One Oregon man recently tried to escape police after driving under the influence of intoxicants. According to reports, the 51-year-old man was driving near the intersection of Southeast Harrison Street and Highway 224 in Milwaukie when he was spotted by police.
Police allege that they tried to pull over the man but the car fled in his car. Eventually, police say that the man left the roadway and crashed into some landscaping outside a Clackamas County fire station. At this police, officers say that the man left his car and refused to listen to police commands. Police officers then used a police dog to subdue the man.
The man was arrested on DUII charges in addition to criminal mischief charges and charges for reckless driving and felony attempt to elude.
Drunk driving charges, such as these, can have serious criminal and civil consequences including license suspension. Fleeing from police or refusing to cooperate can result in additional criminal charges on top of the DUI or DUII charges. People facing these types of charges should make sure to explore all their criminal defense options. In some cases, the right defense can reduce the consequences for an unfortunate mistake.
