Police respond to burglary -- charge resident with drug charges

Police search for and find illegal drugs in many unusual places and situations. In a recent case, the police responded to a call about a burglary at a home in the Parkrose neighborhood in Portland. The case ended with drug charges for the resident of the home.

According to police, while they were securing the house for the burglary call, they noticed a marijuana grow site which included 20 marijuana seedlings and 24 mature marijuana plants. Since the police were unsure if the site was licensed as a legal medical marijuana grow site, they kept the marijuana in place and left the home. However, they did confiscate two rifles that were also found during the search of the house.

Following an investigation, the police say that they determined the home was not licensed to grow medical marijuana and that the 32-year-old resident was a convicted felon. Therefore, the police allege that they returned to the home and arrested the man. He was charged with manufacturing marijuana in addition to a weapons charge. The man was taken to Multnomah County Jail where he is being held.

Drug cultivation and drug possession charges are very serious in Oregon. This man could face serious prison time if convicted on the charges, especially since this is not his first criminal offense. When people have a previous criminal record, criminal charges and their penalties can be more severe.

With all drug crimes people, like the man in this case, should make sure they understand what they are charged with and what penalties they face. Drug charges are varied and complex and often depend on a variety of extenuating circumstances. By understanding the intricacies of the case, people can prepare the best possible defense against the charges.
