When people who have been drinking or consuming drugs make the choice to drive afterwards, they often attempt to protect themselves by keeping an eye out for police vehicles. Many who choose to drive under the influence assume they're safe to do so as long as they don't encounter an officer who can arrest them. This behavior is not only risky, but also not fool-proof, as an Oregon woman recently discovered.
The woman from White City, Oregon, was arrested earlier this week, but not because a patrolling officer simply caught her. She was driving her Nissan on Interstate 5 Monday night when several people called 911 to report that someone was driving recklessly and erratically. One of the callers tracked the woman's car to a casino resort in southern Oregon and even followed the woman inside to keep an eye on her. Oregon State Police officials said the casino security staff helped track the woman down.
State troopers said the woman was visibly intoxicated and failed field sobriety tests. They added that she was also carrying small amounts of methamphetamine and marijuana. She was arrested and taken to the local county jail.
It's important to remember that driving drunk isn't just illegal when police are present. That may seem obvious, but it can be easy to talk yourself into driving intoxicated with the assumption that if you don't run into police, you'll make it home without a problem. Bear in mind that most drivers carry cellphones and many will be quick to dial 911 -- which is easy and legal to do behind the wheel -- if they see someone who might be breaking the law and could cause an accident.
