An Oregon man out on parole was recently involved in a police chase that led to serious charges. These charges -- some of which are felonies -- could lead to prison time for the man. Police allege that they tried to stop the 29-year-old man near the intersection of Walker Road and Canyon Road in the Beaverton area. At the time, the man was apparently driving a stolen truck. Instead of stopping, the man ran from police, they said.
During his initial attempt to escape police, the man hit another car on Canyon Road before entering Oregon Highway 217. The police chase continued from Oregon 217 to U.S. Highway 26. On U.S. 26, the man made a quick left turn, went over a concrete median and smashed into a second car. At this point, police claim, the man got out of the truck and started running away from them. He was apprehended a short time later on the MAX tracks near the roadway.
Following his arrest, the man was charged with felony hit-and-run, assault, criminal mischief, attempting to elude a police officer and reckless driving, among other offenses.
While police chases like this one grab the public's attention, they can mean serious penalties for the driver. When the driver has a past criminal record like the man in this case -- according to reports he has been to jail 23 times since 2002 -- those penalties can be increased.
Felony charges mean that a person can spend more than a year in prison as a result of a conviction. However, felonies can also result in people losing their right to vote or own firearms and can damage their reputation, making it difficult to find or keep employment.
