Oregon officer charged with nine misdemeanors following DUII

Being arrested for criminal allegations does not only mean the accused could face serious penalties but also means that the allegations could impact the criminal suspect's personal and professional reputation. Depending on the type of charges, a defendant could face harsh penalties, even if they are accused of a misdemeanor. Moreover, the pending charges could greatly impact the offender's current or prospective career path, causing some criminal charge to have long-term effects.

Depending on the type of charges, a defendant could face harsh penalties, even if they are accused of a misdemeanor. According to recent reports, the Clackamas County District Attorney's Office filed ninemisdemeanor charges against a Portland Police officer, all stemming from a suspected drunk driving crash. Based on preliminary reports, the officer was charged with three counts of recklessly endangering another person, two counts of second-degree criminal mischief, one count of DUII, fourth degree assault, reckless driving and first-degree official misconduct. All of these are considered Class-A misdemeanor charges.

These charges occurred following a supposed drunk driving accident that resulted in injuries and damages to the other motorist. Allegedly, the officer consumed enough alcohol to impair his driving and also carried personal use alcohol in the police vehicle he operates. The officer has been with the police bureau for 17 years and was assigned to the Tactical Operations Division. Since these criminal allegations, the officer has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the resolution of the matter.

While an internal review and a presentation to a police review board will likely occur in this case, being charged with multiple misdemeanors could greatly impact a police officer's ability to maintain their position as an officer. Moreover, whether the suspect is convicted or not, allegations often carry much weight. Criminal charges, no matter their severity, could harm the accused's professional life. Therefore, it is imperative to consider the criminal defense options available to defendants.
