Don't brave misdemeanor charges alone

It can be easy for people who've been accused of misdemeanor crimes to think that the charges are no big deal. While felony charges carry serious jail time and high fines, many think of misdemeanors as carrying insignificant penalties. However, this is not necessarily the truth. Misdemeanors can have a long-lasting effect on a person's life.

In Oregon, misdemeanors can result in up to one year in jail. A year in jail cannot only interrupt a person's social calendar, but it can be detrimental to their financial health and wellness. It can also interrupt the person's education and career.

Fines for misdemeanors are also serious. While people may think that misdemeanors are nothing more than a slap on the wrist, fines in Oregon can range between $1,250 and $6,250. Again, this could seriously hurt a person's financial well-being. Likewise, it can limit their opportunities for the future.

Keeping these penalties in mind, Oregon residents need to understand why it is so important to mount a proper criminal defense to misdemeanor charges. With the help of an attorney, those accused of a variety of misdemeanors -- including credit card fraud, shoplifting, first offense DUII and carrying a concealed weapon, among others -- can see their lives return to normal. An attorney can help to prove that a person is not guilty of the charges that the person is facing.

This is sometimes done by introducing evidence of a defense. In these cases a person may not be arguing that the crime was not committed, but that the person had a justification for acting the way they did. In other situations, an attorney can help the accused person prove that they were not involved with a particular act at all.
