When Oregonians feel like their needs are not being met, it can be easy for them to lash out against another person or entity. In some situations, this can be healthy. But, Oregonians need to be careful to not break criminal laws in the process. In many cases, misdemeanor charges can be filed against an Oregonian that makes physical or emotional threats against another person.
Recently, in Oregon, a man has been arrested and charged with criminal activity based on letters that he sent to governmental agencies. According to reports, Sheriff's Offices and other governmental agencies from around the state -- 22 in all -- recently received suspicious letters. These letters were all delivered on the same day and in the same way.
Reports claimed that the packages all included a single letter and an unknown substance inside. Authorities claim that the contents of the letter were difficult to decipher and amounted to "gibberish." Initial tests on the letters showed that none contained any powder or toxic substances. The letters have been turned over to federal authorities for further testing. At least one employee of a government agency, however, was hospitalized after the letter was opened. Several other agencies had to be evacuated.
Police claim to have identified the man who sent the letters. While the man was arrested, police claim that he was not a threat and released him. He was charged with misdemeanors. Additional criminal charges may be pending, depending on the results of the investigation.
Even when a person's conduct is non-violent, misdemeanor, charges are possible. In these cases, people face a variety of penalties, including fines and jail time. To protect themselves, people need to aggressively defend themselves throughout a criminal investigation and after charges have been brought.
