Stimulants on college campuses

College is often seen as a time of exploration for young adults. They are trying to determine the direction of their lives through their education. Many college and university students are out on their own for the first time and making all of their adult decisions on their own. Many people take this time to explore the world around them and have fun. Recreational alcohol and drug use is sometimes a part of this exploration.

When recreational drug use comes to mind, many people likely think about marijuana. However, marijuana is not the only drug commonly used on university campuses. In fact, some experts are saying that the non-medical use of prescription stimulants is also very popular. These stimulants include medications used to treat Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder like Adderall, Concerta and Ritalin.

Students often believe that the use of these drugs will help them succeed academically. People believe that these drugs help students concentrate harder and for longer periods of time. They are seen as being a way to increase academic performance for students that might be suffering. However, some studies have also shown that there is an increased risk of alcohol and other drug abuse for people who abuse stimulants. There are also health risks for people without prescriptions. The FDA has included a warning to stimulants warning people of the dangers of their use.

Despite the fact that non-medical stimulant use is not often seen as a problem -- for doctors, parents or students -- people should know that it is illegal. It is illegal for a person with a prescription to give or sell pills to a person without a prescription. Additionally, it is illegal for people to use or obtain prescription drugs that they do not have a prescription for. These types of drug charges can lead to serious criminal problems for college students.

Prescription drug charges are taken seriously in Oregon. If college students face drug charges over stimulant use, then they should contact an attorney to protect their rights.
