Driving under the influence of alcohol is a criminal offense. However, it is one that can easily happen to people that would otherwise never break the law. When people recreationally drink, they may not realize when they have had too much. In some cases, a person can reach the legal limit after only a small or moderate amount of alcohol. This mistake, however, can affect their lives for years to come.
The consequences of DUI charges are immediate in Oregon. People can face fines, jail time, probation and a driver's license suspension. Other consequences can include an ignition interlock device and alcohol education classes.
Alcohol education classes can be ordered in a variety of situations. Depending on the specifics in a particular case, people can go to these classes in exchange for lower criminal penalties. These classes may also be mandatory for people to get their drivers licenses reinstated following a DUI.
There are many different types of alcohol education classes that can be available. Depending on the specific laws, in a person's area, some classes can be basic while others are more intensive. Level I classes -- as they are called -- are generally offered to first-time offenders. These classes are usually available for people who have a blood alcohol content level of .10 percent and no aggravating factors -- like injuries to others. These classes typically last a couple days and teach people about the dangers of alcohol consumption.
Level II classes, on the other hand, are those classes reserved for more serious offenders. These classes typically include some sort of treatment option for people. They are often much longer in duration. These classes are generally for people with multiple DUI convictions.
