Portland residents may have access to a variety of drugs. In most cases, it is illegal for people to possess or use these drugs under any circumstances. However, the reality is that people do make the mistake of using drugs and sometimes get caught.
Recently, a woman was arrested in her car at the intersection of Southwest Harrison Street and Southwest Fourth Avenue in Portland. According to police, they receive a tip that the woman was using drugs in the car while her seven-year-old child was in the backseat. Officers claim that they saw the woman injecting heroin when they approached the car. The woman was arrested and taking to Multnomah County Jail following the incident.
She has been charged with child endangerment and possession of heroin. If convicted, the woman could face serious criminal penalties.
Portland residents -- like this woman -- should know that drug charges do not have to ruin a person's life. With the right help, people can fight drug charges and reduce potential punishments. In particular, those charged with drug possession may have more options available to them than those facing drug trafficking charges. In some cases, drug diversion programs may be available that can help people stay away from drugs in the future while reducing criminal punishments. The criminal defense options available to a person will depend on a variety of factors including where the arrest was made, the type of drug, the amount of the drug and others.
In any cases, people should make sure they understand the criminal defense options available to them following an arrest on drug possession charges. By exercising their right to a criminal defense, people can get back on track as quick as possible following their arrest.
