Two Oregon residents face drug charges after traffic stop

Drug charges are taken seriously in the state of Oregon. Once charged, a person is subject to fines, jail time and other repercussions.

Recently, Oregon State Police pulled over a 2002 Subaru Impreza and they have arrested two people on drug charges. According to reports, the car was searched by a police dog during a traffic stop. Police claim that they found a secret compartment in the car that contained more than six pounds of methamphetamine. The 23-year-old male driver of the car was taken into police custody following the discovery.

The police, however, did not stop their investigation at this point. Instead, police claim that they obtained a search warrant for the man's house. According to police, they found a half-pound of methamphetamine at the home as well as a methamphetamine reduction lab on the property and drug records. In addition to the drugs, police claim to have found seven weapons. During this search, the man's girlfriend, 24, was also arrested.

The two are now facing drug charges including unlawful possession of a controlled substance, unlawful manufacture of a controlled substance, frequenting a place where drugs are used, kept or sold and unlawful delivery.

Drug charges, like these, can have serious repercussions in Oregon. They can result in large fines, the forfeiture of property, prison sentences and more. These consequences can affect a person for years following their arrest. Even drug possession charges will be taken seriously by Oregon police. When larger amounts of the drug are found, the penalties and the seriousness of the charges will increase.

No matter the situation, those facing felony drug charges have options for reducing the charges and avoiding penalties. In cases where a traffic stop was involved, police have to have a valid reason for pulling over the car in the first place, for example. Oregon police do not have the right to search a vehicle at any time for any reason. Without taking the proper steps, evidence obtained in a search may be excluded from court.
