Charges for 2 Oregonians following police search for drugs

Two Oregon residents have been arrested on a variety of drug charges after police served a search warrant. According to police, warrants were issued for two different locations. In the searches of these properties, police say that they recovered more than $20,000 cash, methamphetamine, heroin and two handguns.

As a result of the search, a 36-year-old man was arrested. He was charged with delivery and possession of a controlled substance, unlawful manufacture and felon in possession of a firearm. The man's girlfriend -- a 24-year-old woman -- was also arrested in the search. Subsequently, the woman was charged with drug possession.

Drug charges, like those in this case, can be quite serious. While some drug charges are only misdemeanors, the exact type of the charges will vary significantly based on the circumstances in each case. For example, the amount of drugs found, the type of drugs found and where the drugs are found can all have consequences and can raise the charges to felonies. Furthermore, an intent to distribute the drugs, or manufacturing drugs often result in much more serious charges than simple drug possession charges.

Depending on the type of charges that a person is facing, the penalties can change. Drug possession charges tend to have fewer penalties. Intent to sell or distribute charges often have much more severe penalties including longer prison sentences and larger fines.

However, no matter the type of charges and the potential penalties, people need to make sure that they are aggressively fighting drug charges. Oregon police make mistakes and these mistakes can lead to the confiscation of illegal evidence. By closely examining the procedures used to find the drugs in any particular case, people may be able to exclude evidence from court and thereby lower the potential penalties and charges.
