An Oregon man has been arrested for driving under the influence following a police chase. DUI charges are serious in Oregon and can result in prison sentences, large fines, loss of driving privileges, community service or alcohol education classes. In some cases, the penalties can be more severe because of a person's criminal record or because of the circumstances surrounding the arrest.
In a recent case, a 28-year-old man allegedly approached another man at a gas station to ask about his motorcycle. According to the motorcycle's owner, the man asked to sit on the bike before riding off on it. The motorcycle's owner reported the motorcycle stolen, and police say they quickly received reports of a motorcycle matching the owner's description driving erratically.
Police claim that 20 minutes after the motorcycle was reported stolen, police officers spotted the man on the bike and tried to pull him over. Reports say that the man crashed into a pickup truck that had pulled over. Police arrested him on various charges shortly after that.
Specifically, the man was charged with DUI, reckless driving, unlawful possession of methamphetamine, attempting to elude police and various other charges.
When people are suspected of DUI, running from police can increase the potential criminal charges and penalties. When the police are trying to stop a vehicle for suspected drunk driving, drivers should be aware that there are ways to fight any charges that may be brought. However, by eluding police or refusing DUI testing -- such as breath test refusal -- people can end up in more legal trouble. In these situations, cooperating with police and fighting the charges with an aggressive criminal defense after the fact, may be the best solution.
