Fight results in assault charges for Oregon man

In the full range of emotions that people can feel, anger can be dangerous. When people are angry they sometimes act out in a way that they normally would avoid. While peoples' anger does not excuse their behavior it can sometimes be an explanation for why people did something they did. Even when a person's emotions get the best of them, people should understand that criminal consequences can follow in certain circumstances.

Recently, an Oregon man was arrested following a non-gang-related shooting. According to reports, the 53-year-old man shot an acquaintance - a 27-year-old man - during a fight in Southeast Portland. Police say that the injuries to the 27-year-old were to his leg and were not life-threatening. Following the alleged shooting, police claim that the 53-year-old left the scene and ran to a nearby house. He was taken into police custody shortly after that.

Following his arrest, the man has been charged with second degree assault. Assault charges - such as these - can be very serious felony charges. The penalties associated with assault charges can include fines, long prison sentences, probation and others. People found guilty of felony charges can be left with a permanent criminal record which can limit their housing and employment opportunities. Furthermore, felons lose their right to carry firearms and to vote.

Assault charges that arise in a fit of passion may not be representative of who a person is. People need to do everything they can to prevent a mistake from ruining years of their lives. With the right help, people may be able to reduce the charges or the potential punishments. By presenting an aggressive criminal defense, people give themselves the best shot at resuming a normal life following these types of allegations.
