An Oregon man has been arrested on drug charges in another state. According to reports, the 56-year-old man is a retired Clackamas County sheriff and lives in Creswell. Police stopped the man after they allegedly caught him speeding in a construction zone at around 11:00 a.m.
During the traffic stop, the man apparently admitted to police that he was armed - police eventually found a handgun on the man. Police claim that after talking to the man, they because suspicious of his behavior and eventually they searched his car. In the pickup truck that the man was driving, police allege that they found $80,000 and another firearm. Their suspicion also led them to obtain search warrants for two storage units connected with the man. In the storage units, police claim to have found $750,000 worth of marijuana - or 55 pounds - and an additional $2,185 in cash.
The man was arrested on various felony drug charges including possession of more than 5,000 grams of cannabis, cannabis trafficking, delivery of more than 5,000 grams of cannabis and other felony charges. He is in jail and being held on $1.5 million bond.
Drug trafficking charges - such as the charges in this case - are extremely serious. They often result in strict penalties at the state and federal levels. Trafficking charges are generally more severe than drug possession charges and are the result of carrying large amounts of a particular drug.
But, even in cases where people are accused of drug trafficking, those people are still entitled to a proper criminal defense. In some situations it may be possible to eliminate the charges altogether. In other cases, the charges may be reduced to possession charges which can result in shorter prison sentences and smaller fines.
