Many Oregon residents may not realize the serious consequences that any criminal charges can have on a person. In particular, people may think that misdemeanor charges do no really impact a person's life. However, a recent Oregon case shows the immediate effects that misdemeanor charges can have on people and their careers.
In this case, a 44-year-old attorney was arrested on charges of fourth-degree assault. While the details of the actual altercation are unclear, police say that the charges come from the man's interaction with a 40-year-old woman whom he knows. Police allege that the woman sought medical treatment following the incident which led to an investigation and the charges.
This man, however, is a contract attorney for the city of Cottage Grove. As a result of his working relationship with the city, police have asked state police to take over the criminal investigation of the man. Furthermore, the city of Cottage Grove has suspended the contract which pays the man's law firm between $60,000 and $80,000 a year until the misdemeanor charges have been resolved.
Furthermore, as a result of these charges, the man had to turn himself into state police. He was then jailed and had to pay $2,000 in bail before being released. This man will now have to work through the criminal justice system in order to deal with these charges.
People who face misdemeanor charges can see their jobs affected immediately and they can be sent to jail immediately. Without the right help, people may face even more punishments. Even misdemeanor charges can cause a person to go to jail, pay large fines and other penalties.
