When reports of drug use, manufacture or possession are given to police, Oregon police take those tips seriously. Members of the local community are often asked to give police information about drug crimes, despite having no expertise or experience on the topic. Therefore, even when community members report drug crimes, drug charges can still result for those accused.
Recently, an Oregon waitress reported that she was given drugs -- specifically methamphetamine -- as a tip one evening. This report to local police has led to serious drug charges against a pair. According to police, the waitress called to report that a couple she had served left an envelope filled with a white crystalized powder as a tip. Officers claimed to recognize the substance as meth and therefore arrested the 40-year-old man and the 37-year-old woman.
Following their arrest, police searched the couple. The police claim to have found more drugs in the woman's purse, their car and in a hotel room where they were staying. Police also say that they found items needed to make the drug.
Therefore, the pair was charged with manufacture of methamphetamine and possession of methamphetamine. The woman faces an additional charge for delivery of methamphetamine. These serious charges could result in jail or prison time, large fines, probation and other consequences.
Generally, charges for manufacturing, selling or delivering drugs tend to be more serious than charges for possession. These types of drug charges often result in more serious consequences. However, the nature of the charges and the potential punishments will also change based on where drugs were sold or manufactured, what types of drugs are involved and the quantities. People should make sure they understand the specific charges against them before creating a solid defense.
