Portland man arrested after heroin deaths

When people sell drugs, they may not consider what will happen if a person using those drugs gets hurt or killed as a result of the drug use. However, in Oregon, a drug dealer can face more significant penalties if someone is killed by the drugs they were selling.

Recently, a man was arrested in Portland after police used cell-phone tracking technology. While the man had drug related warrants out for his arrest, police say they wanted to arrest the man for the death of two people. According to police, they believe he sold heroin to two people who overdosed on that heroin -- one death was in late October while the other was in January. If the man is found guilty on these drug charges, he could face life in prison.

During the arrest of this man, police also arrested his suspected dealer. Police claim that they searched this second man's car outside of a hotel in Northeast Portland where the first man was arrested. Police allege that the car contained $3,600 worth of heroin and $4,000 in cash.

Drug charges, especially those for selling drugs -- or drug trafficking -- are very serious. As can be seen in this case, some drug charges can be accompanied by very long prison sentences. They can also include large fines if a person is found guilty. People who have been charged with drug charges may have to forfeit property if found guilty. Furthermore, a criminal record can make it difficult for people to find permanent housing, apply for state benefits or to find a good job.

However, all those facing drug charges have the ability to defend against the charges. With the right defense, evidence may be excluded from court, charges may be reduced and punishments can be avoided.
