When people are charged with crimes, it is very important that they understand what they are being charged with. All criminal charges are not created equal and people can face very different penalties depending on the specific crime they face. In general, felonies are the most serious types of crimes. Felonies include most violent crimes including murder.
Police have recently arrested two men in Marion County on felony charges. According to Oregon police, the men participated in the stabbing death of a Woodburn man in early August. The man was apparently found at his apartment and before taken to a local hospital where he died.
Since the man's death, police have been conducting an investigation which led to the secret indictment of a 27-year-old from Salem and the arrest and indictment of a second man. During the investigation, police identified four people of interest in the case. Four days after the alleged murder, these individuals were arrested and held by Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Police say these arrests were unrelated to the murder.
However, recent murder charges have been brought. The 27-year-old man faces one murder count and is being held without bail. The other man has been charged with unlawful use of a weapon, attempted assault and attempted murder. This man is being held on $500,000 bail. Both men are due in court in Marion County in late September.
Murder charges, like these, should never be taken lightly in Oregon. These charges could lead to life-changing penalties including very long prison sentences. When people are charged with felony charges, they should make sure to closely examine all police conduct during the investigations. When such serious consequences are at stake, people cannot never be too careful in protecting their constitutional rights.
