People may not realize how many rights they have available to them when they have been arrested for a crime. They have the right to remain silent, the right to have an attorney present during police questioning and the right to be treated as innocent until proven guilty. These rights are all important in defending against both felony and misdemeanor crimes.
Without the right criminal defense, even allegations of criminal activity can have a serious effect on a person's life. Take, for example, a recent Oregon case. In this situation, a woman called 911 to report that two people were engaging in a sex act near her in-home daycare. When police showed up, they arrested a man and a woman. According to the police officers, the woman was a prostitute and the man was a fellow officer. Police also alleged that although the man wasn't in uniform at the time of his arrest, he was on duty.
Eventually, the 32-year-old woman was charged with prostitution, probation violation and public indecency. The 50-year-old arrested police officer, on the other hand, was charged with public indecency and patronizing a prostitute.
Despite having worked for the Oregon State Police for 23 years, this one mistake has now cost him his job. The officer recently resigned from his job following his arrest.
It's not uncommon for arrests, or criminal convictions to cause problems with people's jobs. Issues with finding and keeping a job are just one consequence of criminal allegations. However, with the right criminal defense, people can put the allegations behind them and return to normal life. Without the right help, people may be left with a permanent criminal record which could preclude them from certain jobs as well as make it difficult of them to socialize freely or find permanent housing.
