18-year-old arrested for alleged drunk driving

Most people need to use their car to get around. Without a car, getting to and from work, school or other obligations can be difficult and time consuming. For those that have been convicted of driving under the influence, life without a driver's license may be a reality. In Oregon, when someone is convicted of drunk driving, that person risks driver's license suspension -- even for a first offense.

An 18-year-old woman may now lose her license after a recent car accident. According to authorities, they received reports of a drunk driver near Northwest Couch Street and Northwest Third Avenue in Portland. When police attempted to pull over the car, they claim that the driver sped off. The driver allegedly drove through two red lights before hitting two other cars on Southwest Fifth Avenue.

Following the accident, the woman was arrested and taken to Multnomah County jail. She has been charged with attempting to elude by vehicle and driving under the influence of intoxicants, among other charges.

In addition to possibly losing her driver's license, this woman could face jail time and fines. She may also have to take a driver's education class or face similar punishments. Depending on whether or not this is her first offense, these punishments' severity could be increased.

However, before she faces any punishment, the prosecutors will have to prove that she was actually driving while over the legal limit of .08. This is not always easy for prosecutors to do since evidence can be challenged if not collected correctly. Furthermore, the results of certain tests including breath tests are not always accurate and can be thrown out as evidence.
