Criminal cases can get complex very quickly, especially when someone is unfamiliar with the criminal court system. From the initial investigation to the trial, appeals and beyond, people dealing with a criminal charge need guidance. With the proper criminal defense, people may be able to more successfully navigate the process and better ensure that their constitutional rights are upheld.
A recent Oregon case highlights some of the complexities of criminal charges. In this case, a 25-year-old man and a 22-year-old woman were arrested after an alleged criminal spree. According to police reports, officials were called in after a car drove away from a gas station without paying. The gas station attendant apparently gave the license plate number to police. Police matched the plates with a car that had been stolen 45 minutes beforehand.
Police claim that they spotted the couple and the stolen car on Oregon 211. However, as they tried to pull over and arrest the couple, the man refused to stop, police said. Instead, a chase ensued. Police allege that during the chase, the car was going up to 90 mph before a spike strip blew out the tires on the car. The man apparently continued to drive for a short time before pulling over. The pair was then arrested.
Following their arrest the woman was charged with possession of methamphetamine, a drug charge, and unauthorized use of a vehicle, a theft charge. Each of these charges will have their own punishments. The man, on the other hand, was charged with violating parole, recklessly endangering another, unauthorized use of a vehicle and possession of methamphetamine, among other offenses. Again, these charges will all need to be dealt with differently and have individual punishments.
Even in the most complex of cases, the right help can make all the difference. In many cases a positive outcome can be reached for the defendant.
