Driving a car can be dangerous. Poor roads, adverse weather conditions and other drivers can all easily cause an accident. However, there are occasions when someone causes an accident after having too much to drink. These drunk-driving accidents can lead to injuries to the driver and to others involved in the accident. Even if someone gets into an accident, police can and will still issue a DUI charge.
This was recently the case for one Oregon driver. A 38-year-old man watched the Nov. 24 Oregon State University and University of Oregon football game at a friend's house. Police say that after the game, the man got into a pickup truck and drove home. On his way home, the man apparently lost control of the truck on an overpass and crashed into a guardrail. His truck then flew over the guardrail and dangled above Highway 217.
After an hour, police and rescue workers were able to free the man from his truck. According to police, after the accident the man had a blood alcohol content that was six times higher than the legal limit in Oregon. It registered as a .50. Subsequently, the man was charged with DUI and driving with a suspended license.
In situations like this one, where a driver has been accused of causing an accident while driving drunk, charges may be increased from simple DUI. Depending on the damage done, a person could even be charged with a felony. However, if the incident was a person's first offense, prosecutors are sometimes willing to negotiate penalties and charges. With the right help, a person accused of DUI could avoid jail time.
