Naked Portland man charged with DUII after crashing car

It's not hard to find stories about embarrassing or outrageous behavior of someone who's intoxicated. Whether these stories come from news reports, our friends or our own personal history, they have the potential to be amusing, but they can also be a source of legal trouble. Sometimes they can cause so much shame that we don't know where to turn for help.

One recent example from the news is the story of a Portland man who was involved in a car accident Aug. 11 on Highway 30 near the Sauvie Island Bridge. According to police, the 30-year-old man crashed into a power pole, causing his SUV to go up an embankment and back toward the road before rolling over. After the crash, the man allegedly got out of the vehicle, stripped off his clothes and ran out onto the highway, screaming and naked before disappearing over the edge beyond the guardrail, an Oregon State Police lieutenant said. A bystander said he tried to help the man, but that he appeared to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Police located the man about 10 minutes later, floating in the water of a nearby moorage. He was eventually arrested and taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. He's since been cited for driving under the influence of intoxicants, reckless driving and leaving the scene of an accident.

Whether the man's behavior was caused entirely by a controlled substance or mental illness isn't clear, but with the charges against him, he'll need a good attorney who can treat the situation as the very serious case that it is. While readers of the news stories about the incident may find it amusing, the damage to the man's reputation won't be very funny if he's convicted. There's a chance the driver is suffering from much deeper problems than the media reported.

If you've had your own problems with erratic behavior that has gotten you into legal trouble -- particularly if it involves substance abuse -- it's important that you take your legal case and any necessary treatment seriously. Your personal and professional reputation may not be irreparably damaged, but the sooner you take action to address any legal implications, the more quickly and successfully you'll be able to address the underlying issues and move on with your life.
