Even before that famous mug shot of Nick Nolte surfaced years ago, people have obsessed over celebrities who find themselves in trouble with the law. The reality is that fame doesn't protect anyone from an arrest or a court date if authorities suspect they've done something illegal. And while an incriminating photo of an actor or professional athlete provides celebrity tabloid fodder that's entertaining to some, it can also serve as a reminder that everyone makes mistakes.
Here's a recent example: Actor Matthew Fox, best known for his role on the hit TV series "Lost," was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of intoxicants late last week in Bend, Oregon. According to one celebrity news report, he was on his way to a fast-food restaurant with an unidentified passenger when an officer noticed the actor didn't signal properly or stay in his lane. He was pulled over, arrested and taken to the Deschutes County Jail. Probably much to his relief, the station's mug shot machine was broken.
The 45-year-old Fox, who lives with his wife and two children in Bend, was released later that day. His court appearance was scheduled for June 17. The DUII charge is his first, but since the results of his blood-alcohol test weren't made public, it's difficult to say what penalties he might face. Even first-time offenders can receive jail time, probation periods of 18 to 24 months, and a fine of more than $2,000 if the blood alcohol level exceeds .15 percent. Repeat offenses could result in felony charges, stiffer fines and jail time, and the long-term suspension of your driver's license.
Whether you're facing your first DUII or have a more serious problem with drinking and driving, you have just as much cause as any celebrity to try to protect your record and your reputation. An attorney who focuses on drunk-driving cases has the knowledge and experience to help you defend yourself and obtain the best possible outcome.
