Alcohol can cause people to do things they normally wouldn't while sober. Drinking gives some people a false sense of confidence that can lead to dangerous behavior, and very often that behavior is illegal. The most obvious and common example is driving drunk. But many people take things farther than that.
A man from Vancouver, Washington, was arrested on a recent Saturday night on suspicion of driving under the influence of intoxicants. But that's not all. An Oregon State Police spokesman said troopers spotted two cars going well over the speed limit on U.S. Highway 26 west of Welches, Oregon, around 10 p.m. The cars were allegedly going about 95 mph in a 45 mph zone. The troopers pulled over both cars, and each driver said that the other was chasing him in an effort to provoke him.
The driver from Vancouver was arrested on suspicion of DUII, speed racing, driving with a suspended license, speeding and possessing an open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle. He was booked into the Clackamas County Jail and released until his court date. The other driver was cited to appear in court to answer charges of speed racing and speeding.
While driving twice as fast as the posted speed limit is a bad idea and illegal even when sober, doing so while drunk is an especially bad decision and one that most drivers don't consider before they're pulled over. If the driver in this case is convicted of DUII and the speeding charges, he will likely face extra penalties for driving without a valid license. It's crucial for someone in his situation to find an attorney with several years of experience in defending those accused of drunk driving.
