Many people in Oregon have made the mistake of driving after drinking too much. Driving under the influence of intoxicants can be an easy mistake to make. People may not realize that they had one drink too many until it is too late.
While DUII can lead to serious criminal charges, these charges depend on the circumstances surrounding a person's arrest. If the person is arrested after being pulled over by police for some reason, then the penalties may not be as severe as someone who is arrested following a car accident. When a person causes a car accident while drinking and driving, the penalties can be severe.
Recently, police in Southwest Portland arrested a 20-year-old driver on a variety of criminal charges. These charges include DUII, reckless driving, two types of assault, misdemeanor, felony hit-and-run and vehicular assault on a pedestrian.
According to reports, the driver was responsible for an accident that occurred near the intersection of Market Street and Southwest 11th Avenue, near Portland State University. The accident occurred at around 6:00 a.m.
The man is accused of hitting a pedestrian with his car. Following the accident, the driver failed to stop. Police claim that a police cruiser eventually bumped into the car to get it to stop, and the man was arrested. The alleged victim is expected to survive.
DUII charges, following a car accident, are very serious. Individuals charged with causing an accident while under the influence can face severe penalties, including jail or prison time, large fines, the loss of a driver's license and more. People in this situation should know that they have legal rights and the ability to defend against the charges.
